When Should You Repair Your Air Conditioner and When Should You Replace It
Your A/C system is chugging away through another Fort Lauderdale summer and suddenly your cold air stops coming out. You call an air conditioning professional to come out to take a look and by the time it’s all said and done you’re going to have to pay a steep price for the repair. So at what point should you call it a day and just change out your current AC equipment?
Age
Obviously the older your system gets, the more it’s likely to breakdown and lose efficiency. A/C systems over eight years old are actually much less efficient than the new energy-efficient models available today. But if your air conditioner is more than 14 years old, you are likely to put in more money over time to keep it functioning than if you just bought a new, energy-efficient A/C system.
Money
To continue with the theme above, ultimately it’s going to begin costing more to invest in new parts and fix issues than it would to just buy a new A/C. Another factor to remember is R-22, the common refrigerant for old air conditioning equipment, is being phased out for the safety of the environment. If your AC was assembled before 2010, you will probably see a spike in the fee for your refrigerant until you replace your equipment.
Efficiency
Science is constantly advancing and with that comes more energy-efficient air conditioners. New equipment tends to cost less to run because they are capable of cooling the home more efficiently, decreasing your cooling bills – and who doesn’t want that?
